Report from Awards Committee 2018
It was a considerable challenge to decide on two candidates after careful study of more than forty worthy applications for the Niagara Secondary OECTA Award. All submissions represented a remarkable balance of time divided among academics, athletics and arts pursuits as well as volunteering in the Church and community, service clubs, employment and individual interests.
This year’s recipients are:
AHMED EL SAYED (SAINT MICHAEL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL)
Ahmed came to the committee with the “absolute highest recommendation” from one of his referees. An outstanding transcript summarized his stellar academic performance over his four years. He also taught Arabic to children, tutored Syrian refugees, raised money for #TheInsideRide, played travel soccer and volunteered at the St. Catharines General Hospital. We wish him every success in his studies in engineering at University.
DANIELA LOZANO (BLESSED TRINITY CATHOLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL)
Daniela has an impressive accumulation of volunteer hours in her school, tutoring, fundraising and coordinating activities at the Lincoln Park Retirement Residence. She coaches soccer and tennis, while volunteering at Gillian’s Place. She was elected Student Council President and was nominated for Ontario Youth Citizen of the Year. We wish Daniela well as she pursues studies in Geology at Post Secondary.
